Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

Is there an easy way to display local profiles from the web UI (the ones in /web/accounts/ that allow following and interaction)?

I know I can copy-paste the username in the searchbox, and just now I found about the secret 'p' hotkey, but I don't find either qualify as easy, sorry

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc rant

Okay, seems that was a silly question?

But, come on, Mastodon is super confusing here. Say I hover my pointer over my name or picture on the timeline:

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro Left-click on the name or profile pictures works fine, but I'm not sure that's what your looking for 馃 I'm on glitch-soc.

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@tagada Oh. Thanks, it actually does!

I always thought it would send me to the remote profile instead, because, well, that is the link target my browser shows

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro Yep, I guess Mastodon catch interactions with those links ! Even works on mentions.
And you can still open the remote profile in a new tab with a middle-click or Ctrl + left-click.

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@tagada Yes, that's what I finally found out!

(I still find that very counter-intuitive. If I click a link I expect it will just bring me to the link target, not hijack it to send me somewhere else :blobcatglaredrink:
Guess I'll get used to it)

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro (You've got a point ! There might be some technical reasons behind... or maybe laziness 馃榿)

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro @tagada It makes sense UX-wise. If you copy the link to send it to someone else it makes sense to have the "direct" link to their profile, but if you wanna inspect it yourself it makes sense to open it in-app. It's a pattern that is kind of unique to federated software, since for a centralized app it could be the same link either way.
It's only counter-intuitive because you inspect the link target, which most people don't, even around here.

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro @tagada The unique part being having different URLs, not handling the interaction in-app, that part most modern web apps do. Like if you click a profile on Twitter, your browser does not load the target document, instead it calls the API and shows you the result. It's all transparent because it also changes the URL to what you would have loaded by following the link anyway.

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@linfaelis Well, it's also counter-intuitive to me because I only ever middle-click links (but nothing to do with my 752 open tabs, nothing at all :blobcatinnocent:鈥). It never occurred to me to left-click it.

Perhaps it wouldn't be as bad if it were not a link at all, and just a clickable UI element like the toot text or the fav button.

I guess the source of my confusion is that I think of it as a webpage, while Masto designers think of it as an app @tagada

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro But if it wasn't a link it would be counter-intuitive to those looking to open it in a new tab or to copy the link target :P. But yeah it really is the app vs website confusion, which is quite a recurrent thing in modern web.

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@linfaelis In Pleroma, the link just points to the local profile and lets me open it in a new tab (or even share it: catgirl.science/users/A245tX08 ).

I find this behaviour more consistent once you get the difference between local and remote profiles (a distinction we need to understand anyway, even on Mastodon)

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro Yeah that's the other way of going at it. Even on Mastodon if you open the /web/accounts URL without being logged in it just forwards you to the remote URL so in effects it's fairly equivalent, but then you lose the readability of the link (i.e pipou.academy/@caro clearly states who's profile on which instance it is whereas eldritch.cafe/web/accounts/204 shows neither)

re: Mastodon/Glitchsoc question

@caro In the end it's a design decision to take, and although I understand why it can be counter-intuitive, I think Mastodon's choice is better for most users (especially the younger ones, more used to that kind of behaviour)
